A/C Bootleggers

It happens every year in the summer. A service technician will be tempted to do a side job for cash or an ex-employee will contact former customers to do work for them for cash. It is a losing situation for everyone. Yes, the consumer thinks they are saving big money but unless you deal with a licensed company you have no warranty, period. You saved $200 on a $500 motor you say! Let's hope it doesn't go bad. Think about the reputation of the person you are dealing with, if they have cheated or lied to a company why will they not do the same to you? How did that guy get your motor to begin with? Simply put, you must have a State License to buy, yes buy air conditioning parts much less repair or install equipment. That makes it illegal for a parts house to sell to an unlicensed individual so they either got it off of their company truck, which would be stealing or they lied at the parts counter and bought it under someone's license without them knowing. Ethics aside, who are you going to turn to if the repair heads south and you have damage incurred to your home? A licensed company will be fully bonded and insured otherwise your insurance policy is where you turn to. Something as simple as a pvc fitting leaking can cause a lot of water damage. Ventpipe not installed correctly can cause carbon monoxide to leak back into your home. Times are hard and our economy is slowly being revived and everyone is doing the best they can with what they have but I would encourage consumers to look at other options than hiring a bootlegger to do their air conditiong work for the risks are high and you are rolling the dice on truly getting your moneys worth in the long run.
